Vinoba Bhave University was established as a teaching-cum-affiliating university in the year 1992 on the 17th of September. This university was established after being divided from the Ranchi University. Initially, Vinoba Bhave University was under the jurisdiction of the state of Bihar and after the formation of the state of Jharkhand in the year 2000, the university came under the new state.
