Vinoba Bhave University was established as a teaching-cum-affiliating university in the year 1992 on the 17th of September. This university was established after being divided from the Ranchi University. Initially, Vinoba Bhave University was under the jurisdiction of the state of Bihar and after the formation of the state of Jharkhand in the year 2000, the university came under the new state.


As a teaching university, Vinoba Bhave University is offering education through six of its departments, namely professional department, management department, commerce department, science department, languages department and humanities department. As a teaching-cum-affiliating university, Vinoba Bhave University is offering courses under different levels of education like PG, M. Phil, Ph. D and Doctoral courses.

As an affiliating university, education is offered through 26 constituent colleges and 49 affiliated colleges coming under its jurisdiction. Right from its formation, Vinoba Bhave University had devoted itself to offer the best quality education in all the disciplines of education offered by it.
