Vinoba Bhave University was established as a teaching-cum-affiliating university in the year 1992 on the 17th of September. This university was established after being divided from the Ranchi University. Initially, Vinoba Bhave University was under the jurisdiction of the state of Bihar and after the formation of the state of Jharkhand in the year 2000, the university came under the new state.
As a teaching university, Vinoba Bhave University is offering education through six of its departments, namely professional department, management department, commerce department, science department, languages department and humanities department. As a teaching-cum-affiliating university, Vinoba Bhave University is offering courses under different levels of education like PG, M. Phil, Ph. D and Doctoral courses.
As an affiliating university, education is offered through 26 constituent colleges and 49 affiliated colleges coming under its jurisdiction. Right from its formation, Vinoba Bhave University had devoted itself to offer the best quality education in all the disciplines of education offered by it. Even though, Vinoba Bhave University began its journey with six departments, the university is presently maintaining 22 postgraduate departments, which includes the recently established Dietetics, clinical nutrition and biotechnology departments. In addition, the university is presently offering education under nine different faculties namely education, homeopathy, ayurveda, medicine, law, engineering, commerce, social sciences and humanities.
Vinobha Bhave University is also planning to introduce several new professional courses at the PG level like Master of law, Master of Geoinformatics and remote sensing, diploma in library sciences and diploma/degree in physical education. The affiliated colleges coming under this university not only includes arts & science colleges, but also includes several professional colleges in the fields of engineering & medicine.
Even though, six other universities are functioning in the state of Jharkhand, Vinoba Bhave University is unique among them in the sense that it has the entire state under its jurisdiction and has whole control over colleges offering education in the faculties of homeopathy, Ayurved and Sanskrit in the state of Jharkhand. The university has also submitted a proposal to the Government of Jharkhand recently requesting permission to introduce 15 new vocational courses at the UG level.
Vinobha Bhave University is offering MBA and MCA courses at the PG level and both these courses are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education. The university presently has ten Bachelor of education colleges under its jurisdiction and in the engineering college functioning under this university, admission of students is based on the state entrance examination.
